Pink diamonds have long been highly popular as center stones for engagement rings and anniversary jewelry. Among colored diamonds, this stone stands out as being in a class of its own, but in recent years, there has been a sharp increase in voices saying, 'I want one, but it's hard to find a good quality stone.'
The reason is simple: the Argyle mine in Australia, which accounted for over 90% of the world's pink diamond supply, closed in 2020.
Why does the closure of the Argyle mine have such a major impact?
The Argyle mine operated for nearly 40 years, but mining was discontinued because the extraction costs no longer justified the yield of gem-quality diamonds, and the ore deposits had become too deep. This mine was a global source for rare colored diamonds such as pink, red, purple, and violet, and was virtually the only stable supply source capable of consistently delivering vivid and intensely colored pink diamonds to the market.
While other mines do produce pink diamonds, the presence of different impurities tends to result in paler colors, making it extremely rare to encounter stones with the strong, vibrant coloration characteristic of Argyle diamonds.
In other words, what appears on store shelves or circulates in the market today is almost entirely "previously mined inventory," and no new stones are being produced. In particular, center stone-grade diamonds around 0.3ct with strong coloration (Fancy Intense or higher) are becoming increasingly difficult to obtain year by year.
Still, if you ”search,” good stones are still out there
That said, pink diamonds have not completely disappeared from the market. Leveraging our long-established sourcing channels, we were able to introduce beautiful natural-colored pink diamonds suitable for center stones this time as well.
